That’s the opinion of Hon. Dr. Andrew Wheatley, Jamaica’s Minister of Science, Energy and Technology. The minister was speaking on the sidelines of the first full day of CANTO 33rd Annual Conference and Trade Exhibition, in the Dominican Republic, Jamaica’s minister of Technology Hon. Andrew Wheatley stressed the importance of Big Data and ICT not only to government, but as part of everyday life for the citizens of Jamaica and the Caribbean.
Minister Wheatley described Big Data as “what’s happening now” and that the vast amount of data must be used in a way so that government can make informed decisions, and help government craft policies.
The minister went further saying, “As a region we have to ensure that we stay on par if not step ahead of the game, because for us to become competitive, we have to incorporate ICT in our everyday lives it has to be a part of every facet of our everyday lives. It has to be a part of how government interacts with itself, and how government interacts with its citizens and by extension the rest of the world.”
